Mansfield Theft Crime Attorney

Are you accused of stealing property or services?

My law firm, The Mayer Law Firm, provides aggressive defense for individuals throughout North Central Ohio who are being charged with theft crimes. In the state of Ohio, "theft" is defined as the act of taking or exerting control over someone else's property or services without the owner's consent, or beyond the scope of the owner's consent. In order for such an act to be considered a criminal act, the alleged offender must have acted with the intention of depriving the owner of the property or services. According to Ohio law (Ohio Revised Code §2913.02), theft may be carried out through deception, threat or intimidation.

Whether you are being accused of stealing a single item from a store or stealing millions of dollars in property or services, you can depend on my law firm for effective legal counsel. I am a Mansfield criminal defense lawyer who has brings 18 years of criminal law experience to the table. That experience includes time spent as a felony prosecutor in Franklin County, Ohio. Because I have handled more than 50 bench and jury trials throughout my career, I am fully prepared to serve as a strong courtroom advocate on your behalf!

Types of Theft Crimes

Ohio law lists various types of theft crimes that individuals can be charged with. The severity of the offense depends on the value of the allegedly stolen property or services:

Petty Theft (1st Degree Misdemeanor)

Value is less than $1000

Theft (5th Degree Felony)
Value is $1,000 or more, but less than $7,500

Theft (4th Degree Felony)
Value is $7,500 or more, but less than $150,000

Theft (3rd Degree Felony)
Value is $150,000 or more, but less than $750,000

Theft (2nd Degree Felony)
Value is $750,000 or more, but less than $1,500,000

Theft (1st Degree Felony)
Value is $1,500,000 or more

Theft of a firearm and theft of a motor vehicle are each considered grand theft. Theft of a firearm is classified as a third-degree felony, and theft of a motor vehicle is classified as a fourth-degree felony. A person may face harsher penalties if the victim of the alleged theft crime is an elderly person or a disabled adult. Possible penalties for theft crime convictions include imprisonment, expensive fines and a requirement to pay the victim(s) restitution.
